Why Valencia is a hotspot for international internships
Valencia has quietly become one of the most popular destinations for international interns. And it's easy to see why.
Loads of international companies, an affordable lifestyle and sunshine pretty much all year round.
What makes it different from Barcelona or Madrid? The size. Valencia is big enough to offer plenty of internships, but small enough to feel like home within weeks. Plus a huge international student community, so you'll never feel like the only newcomer. 🌍
Doing an internship as an HBO student
At weWow, our internships are aimed at HBO students. Both your work placement and your graduation internship can be done abroad — as long as it fits your study program and your school approves it.
A few things to keep in mind:
✅ It has to match your study program in level and content.
📝 Your school needs to approve it first.
🇪🇺 Within the EU you don't need a visa or work permit.
⏳ Start prepping early — think 6 to 9 months ahead.
Do you need to speak Spanish?
Short answer: no.
At most international companies English is the working language. At weWow everything runs in English and our team comes from more than 30 nationalities.
That said, a bit of Spanish makes daily life so much easier. And don't worry... we offer free Spanish lessons, so you can just pick it up while you're here. ☕
And the money side?
In Spain there are two types of internships. Curricular ones (part of your studies) don't legally require a compensation, though many companies offer one anyway. Extracurricular ones usually do.
Doing your internship in Europe? You can also apply for an extra Erasmus+ grant through your school — for Spain often €350 to €500 per month. Just start early, the deadlines sneak up. 😉
Where do you live?
Finding a place as an intern takes some effort, but there are good options:
🔎 Shared apartments via Idealista, Spotahome or Uniplaces.
🤝 Co-living spaces made for internationals — fully furnished, move-in ready.
💬 Facebook groups like "Expats in Valencia" or "Nederlanders in Valencia".
Rough budget? Around €500–€800 for a room in a shared flat, or €800–€1,000 for your own studio.
